| About Rectangle Weaving - Continuous Yarn
Method Also called Continuous Strand Weaving, Continuous Loop Weaving. The good news is that there are only 2 basic ways you can do this type of weaving on a rectangle - The popular left-return method promoted by some fiber studios for their looms, and the right-return method that I use on all my rectangle looms and 2-square and longer Weavingboards. What are the differences you ask? My method uses a rectangle one pin longer than the left-return method. You can see why; in the left return style, the yarn would turn 180 degrees to the left around the upper right corner pin, or counter clockwise on an even-squared rectangle. This uses one less pin to get a 'perfect final weaving path' than my right return method, which has the yarn turning 180 degrees around the upper right corner pin to the right, or clockwise on an even squared rectangle. This uses one more pin just to return to the starting corner. Using either method works out on my looms, having an extra pin or two at the end with the left-return method is not a problem. The weaving evens out when taken off the loom. So one difference is the length of the 'perfect' rectangle, but it is not critical when using one of my looms. So when the question is asked, "what is the formula for the pin arrangement for a rectangle loom", there is not just one answer. There are many other formulas out there besides the ones I have discovered for the left and right return methods. There is a way to test your loom to see if you have an open path for the final strand. Lace on the yarn in loops which is much faster than actually weaving, and can help you determine that the turning points are correct. I will soon be listing for sale 100% adjustable rectangle looms that can be set at any width or length setting. Then the user can have an ideal setting for each of these two methods or any other variation. See the rectangle loom page for more on this loom as it is available. The other difference is the way you have to twist the loop after weaving out of a square with the left-return method, or a glitch will result. . My right-return method doesn't require you to watch for this. When changing yarn or colors, this is done the same way with both methods, at the left or starting end of the loom where the yarn ends can become part of a fringe. The upper left corner is used as the starting point for your yarn in both methods, so that the instruction references are uniform. If you had this system down, you could start in any corner. |

You could skip every other pin to get double spacing. I can do a finer 3/16" spacing now custom order. Weavingboards come in several categories, each with several size choices:
Triangle Weavingboards
A small one-piece triangle loom, these weavingboards are useful
for learning weaving on the triangle loom or for making small weavings for
quilting or fiber-art projects. They are fine sett, with the 1/4"
spacing on the short sides, less than 3/8" (9mm) on the long side. I make
these in 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inch sizes. These
measurements are of the short side of the triangle. The old standard
way of measuring a triangle loom is to measure the hypotenuse or long side.
The chart compares the hypotenuse length for each size.

Square Weavingboards can be ordered in the above
sizes. They have the square loom only, no triangle. These prices
are for 1/4 inch spacing, add $1.00 for 3/16" spacing, 3/8" spacing price:
$1.00 less. Photo shows 3/8" spacing on a 10" weavingboard made for a
custom order.

Combination Triangle and Square Weavingboards (Tri-Squares)
These square looms can also weave a triangle simply by
moving a row of movable pins to the triangle row of holes. This can
be done using only your fingertips. I make them in the same
sizes as the triangle weavingboards shown above. You only need this
one Weavingboard to make matching triangle and square weavings for quilting,
etc. The sides of the triangle weaving will exactly match the sides of
a square weaving made on the same loom. You can also get sizes in
multiples to create quilt-type patterns by doubling the size of one weaving.
Then when you put 4 smaller square weavings together to form a square, that
square will be the same size as the larger square. The 5" and 10"
sizes are complimentary in this way, as are the 6" and 12" sizes. You
can also put two triangle weavings together along the hypotenuse to
equal one square weaving in size.

Rectangle Weavingboards
| These looms are a combination of the small triangle loom,
the square loom, and rectangles of various lengths. These looms could
be made in any width, and have one row of removable pins that
can be pulled from one row and placed in the other using your fingertips.
A two-square Weavingboard lets you choose the triangle, the square or
a 2-square rectangle. A 4-square combination Weavingboard does the
triangle, square, or 2, 3, & 4 square rectangles. The photo shows a
weaving of three squares being finished on a 5" wide board that has a
possible four squares. You can see the final single strand of the
continuous yarn weaving method done in pink yarn. There was an empty 'weaving path' for
that last strand as there will be on any of my rectangle looms. Other longer lengths ( 6 or 8 times width) are
possible, especially in the narrow widths.
Actual weaving lengths are slightly more than the width times the number of squares. For instance, the long rectangle on the 5" x 4 SQ board is 20 1/2 inches. the 5" x 6 SQ loom weaves a rectangle 30 3/4 inches in length. This is the nature of continuous yarn weaving. IMHO, the real rectangle continuous yarn weaving experience is on a rectangle 4 squares or more. However, the size of a 2 square rectangle might be just what you need, and the shorter loom may be easier to use as a lap loom. 5" Rectangle Weavingboards The 4 SQ board would be good for learning rectangle weaving, square weaving, and triangle weaving. Small enough to use on your lap. It is the only longer rectangle weavingbord I have on Etsy. I could make custom one 9 squares long and it would still fit in a standard 4' long box. Other widths can be custom ordered.

Above are the 5 shapes made by a 5" x 4 SQ rectangle Weavingborad. This size is for sale right now on Etsy at my shop. Other widths could be custom ordered. You could join rectangle weavings lengthwise to get longer scarves with your shorter rectangle weavingboards.
Above is a 7.5inch x 6sq weavingboard with a weaving started on a rectangle using 5 of the 6 possible squares. The 7.5 inch size is a prototype that I won't be making as a standard size, but I could make as a custom order. The 7.5" has less wood margin down the sides so fits in a smaller box than the 8" model. I can make on custom order any length Weavingboard. I will not have shipping boxes for these extra long weavingboards, but if sold as a kit, I will be able to package them for UPS shipping, continental US only, and not have to package them so as to prevent damage to the nails which will be included loose. The kits will have all the holes drilled and the wood sanded.
